The Wide Window is the third book in A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Baudelaire orphans—Violet, Klaus, and Sunny—are sent to live with their nervous, perpetually frightened Aunt Josephine at her rickety, precarious house perched high above Lake Lachrymose. Aunt Josephine is obsessed with grammar and terrified of everything, especially the lake's leeches. The orphans soon encounter their enemy, Count Olaf, who is disguised as a charming sea captain named Captain Sham. Olaf manipulates the fearful Josephine into writing a fraudulent suicide note, planning to take custody of the children and their fortune. The Baudelaires must use their knowledge of grammar and deduction to decipher the note and escape Olaf's clutches during a dramatic hurricane on the treacherous lake.
