The Twits is one of Roald Dahl’s most deliciously disgusting and darkly humorous novels, centering on the two of the most grotesque characters in children’s literature, Mr. and Mrs. Twit. The Twits are a vile, cruel, and hideous couple who live in a filthy house and derive immense joy from playing increasingly elaborate and nasty tricks on each other. Mrs. Twit, with her glass eye and walking stick, and Mr. Twit, with his long, filthy beard full of food scraps, are utterly devoid of kindness. Their malice extends to trapping small birds for food and tormenting a family of innocent monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, whom they force to perform tricks. The story climaxes when the Muggle-Wumps, aided by a helpful Roly-Poly bird, plot a magnificent, justifiably disgusting, and very funny revenge against the terrible couple. Dahl uses this extreme narrative to explore themes of ugliness (both physical and moral), cruelty, and the eventual triumph of the innocent, making it a powerful and hilarious cautionary tale against wickedness.
