The Reptile Room is the second book in the unfortunate A Series of Unfortunate Events, following the Baudelaire orphans after their narrow escape from the clutches of the evil Count Olaf in the first installment. This time, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are whisked away to live with their distant relative, the kindly and deeply eccentric herpetologist Dr. Montgomery Montgomery, whom they affectionately call Uncle Monty. Uncle Monty is a sweet, if slightly distracted, guardian who lives in a large house filled with a collection of the world's most impressive and deadly reptiles. For the first time since their parents' death, the children feel a glimmer of safety and happiness. However, this peace is violently shattered by the arrival of a new assistant, 'Stephano,' a sinister, beady-eyed figure who is, naturally, Count Olaf in a flimsy disguise, complete with an absurdly fake Italian accent. Olaf-as-Stephano immediately attempts to orchestrate a 'reptile-related' death for Uncle Monty to seize the Baudelaire fortune.
