The Miserable Mill is the fourth book in the darkly humorous and often unsettling series A Series of Unfortunate Events. The three Baudelaire orphans—Violet, Klaus, and Sunny—are sent to live in Paltryville, at the bleak, dismal, industrial lumber mill known as the Lucky Smells Lumbermill. They find themselves forced into manual labor under terrible working conditions and the cruel management of the mill owner. Unsurprisingly, their villainous nemesis, Count Olaf, soon appears in a new, ridiculously transparent disguise—a supposed hypnotist named Shirley. Olaf schemes to trick the children into signing away their vast inheritance. The children must use their unique skills—Violet’s inventing, Klaus’s research, and Sunny’s biting—to avoid dangerous accidents, unravel Olaf’s plot, and escape the dangerous, mechanized misery of the miserable mill.
