Asterix and the Normans (Album 9) is a brilliant, action-packed culture clash featuring the arrival of the fearless, but utterly humorless, Normans from the North. The Normans, led by the huge, terrifying Chief Wotthemorals, are sailing to Gaul because they have heard that fear gives one wings, and they want to learn what fear is, as they have never experienced it. The Gaulish village is temporarily playing host to Justforkix, the overly-sophisticated and cowardly teenage nephew of Chief Vitalstatistix, who has been sent from Lutetia (Paris) to be toughened up. The Normans arrive, kidnap Justforkix, and take him back to Normandy, believing that his extreme cowardice will teach them the meaning of fear. Asterix and Obelix must sail across the English Channel to rescue Justforkix from the Normans, who are determined to make the boy afraid, no matter what it takes. The adventure is a funny satire on stoicism, existential angst, and the nature of courage, with the Normans’ serious, literal interpretation of everything creating huge comedic potential. The core plot revolves around the Normans' attempts to frighten the boy, while Asterix and Obelix battle their way across the Norman countryside. The climax involves a chaotic, music-filled showdown where the Normans finally experience fear through the excruciatingly bad singing of Cacofonix the bard, proving that courage can be found in the most unexpected places.
