Asterix and the Magic Carpet (Album 28) takes the Gaulish heroes on an exciting journey to the Far East, specifically to a land based on ancient India, where they encounter the Maharajah of a poor, desolate kingdom. The adventure is triggered by a sudden, devastating drought that threatens the Maharajah's kingdom and the life of his beautiful daughter, Princess Orinjade. The only way to save the kingdom is to ensure the tears of the beautiful princess fall upon the parched earth, but the evil, power-hungry Royal Vizier, Vaztore, has secretly kidnapped the court's official rainmaker and is using magic to prevent the rains from falling, planning to seize power for himself. The Maharajah’s emissary, a travelling Hindu Fakir named Watzizname, travels all the way to Gaul on his magic carpet to implore Getafix, the famous Druid, for his rainmaking skills. Getafix, along with Asterix and Obelix, agrees to help and embarks on a long, arduous journey by magic carpet. The trio must brave various weather phenomena, including fog and thunderstorms, all while fending off attacks from Vaztore's agents. This story is a colorful parody of Eastern folklore and opera, especially the story of Turandot. The heroes' mission is to free the rainmaker and restore the proper balance of nature, all before the villain Vaztore can complete his nefarious coup and marry the princess. It’s an imaginative and highly visual adventure full of cultural gags and slapstick high jinks.
