Asterix and the Griffin (Album 39) is a thrilling, snowy adventure where Asterix and Obelix travel far from their cozy village to the mysterious, frozen land of the Sarmatians, a historical people residing in what is now Ukraine, near the Black Sea. The action begins when an old, mysterious friend of Getafix, a female shaman named Fanzine, sends a desperate message asking for their help. A Roman expedition, led by the historian Terracognitus and the centurion Morsglanus, is deep within Sarmatian territory, having been commissioned by Julius Caesar to capture a creature believed to be the last living Griffin, a legendary beast symbolizing the freedom of the Sarmatian people. The quest to find and capture the Griffin before the Romans do becomes the central conflict. The story is a rich tapestry of cultural exploration, introducing readers to the unique customs, matriarchal structure, and nomadic lifestyle of the Sarmatians, all rendered with the series' signature wit and anachronistic humour. The duo must brave the extreme cold, face off against Roman scouts, and deal with the challenges of communicating across different cultures. This adventure highlights the themes of ecological protection and respecting native legends, offering a fresh, exciting challenge that tests the limits of the Gaulish heroes’ courage and their famous magic potion in a completely new environment.
