Puss in Boots is a classic trickster fairy tale about a remarkably clever, anthropomorphic cat. The story begins when a poor miller dies, leaving his eldest two sons with a mill and a donkey, and the youngest son with only the family cat. Desperate to prove his worth and improve his master's meager fortune, the cat demands a sack and a magnificent pair of boots. Adorned in his footwear, Puss embarks on an elaborate series of cunning schemes. He hunts game, which he presents to the King as gifts from his fictional master, the wealthy Marquis of Carabas. Puss then tricks the King into providing his master with royal attire and finally leads the royal carriage to a grand castle belonging to a formidable, shape-shifting ogre. By flattering the ogre into transforming into a tiny mouse, which Puss promptly devours, the cat secures the castle and all the surrounding land for the Marquis, thereby guaranteeing his master's fortune and a marriage to the Princess.
